Montessori Primary Classroom Assistant

Lewis & Clark Montessori Charter School is seeking a Classroom Assistant to work with our youngest students ages 2.5 yrs to 5 yrs.  The schedule is 7:15 am until 4:00pm Mon-Thu (Late August through Early June).  Applicant should be prepared to work in a classroom setting and work cohesively with the lead teacher. The job duties range from organizing materials and cleaning the workspace to facilitating the learning process for each child.   Montessori Classroom Assistants support the Montessori teaching method and help guide the child through self-directed activities.  This position plays a key role to ensuring the complex learning environment is prepared for children by:

•   Enabling Montessori teachers to focus on instruction without interruption.

•   Having a broad awareness of the environment not only protects the teacher’s lessons but also assures that observational data is regularly being gathered while still ensuring students are navigating the environment appropriately, and concentration for uninterrupted work is honored.

·   The teacher and assistant’s interactions offer a constant model of grace and courtesy for students to emulate, something not possible with only one adult present.

Other Daily Responsibilities Include:

Getting the classroom environment ready for lessons.
Helping children who need support to complete tasks.
Helping teacher to prepare learning activities and materials.
Support teacher in managing class behavior.
Supervise and guide students during various activities both indoors and outdoors.
Provide a safe environment by maintaining orderly, clean, and appealing facilities
Follow and enforce school standards and procedures.
Communicate and collaborate with school faculty and student families.

Skills / Qualifications:

A college degree is preferred; this position is perfect for aspiring teachers or newly trained Montessori guides.
The position does not require prior experience in Montessori but does require a willingness to learn, the ability to accept all feedback and implement suggestions as prescribed.  Childcare experience is preferred.  Excellent verbal communication skills and emotional control are required for a bustling environment.
