Xavier University is currently seeking a full-time Early Childhood Assistant Teacher for the Montessori Laboratory School. The Assistant Teacher works cohesively with the Head Teacher to provide educational instruction and guidance to children 3-6 years in the Early Childhood classroom. Following the principles of Montessori education; the full time Assistant Teacher is knowledgeable of Montessori terminology; aids the Head teacher in the preparation of the environment; observes and records children’s progress; adheres to school and State safety requirements and guidelines; supports the afternoon kindergarten enrichment program, and fosters supportive relationships with the parent community and school community at large.

Responsible for preparing a safe environment (indoor and outdoor) on a daily basis, and making sure each activity is beautiful, complete and prepared for children’s independent use. The Assistant Teacher is responsible for maintaining supplies for the classroom and for maintaining the indoor and outdoor environment.

Responsible for supporting the Head Teacher in communicating with the parents, and to be present for all Lab School functions that may occur after school hours to include but not be limited to: parent education nights, open houses, parent-child work days, and Montessori gala. Assistant Teacher is required to attend parent/teacher conferences two times per year and to be present for all school and family functions according to the Lab School calendar.

Position also requires the flexibility and knowledge to work with students (Ages 3 – 14 years) one on one to support them in their development. The candidate must be a team player and possess the ability to use his/her knowledge of theories, concepts and practices in complex, difficult or unprecedented situations.

Required Education and Experience 

Bachelor’s Degree Required. Bachelor’s degree in education preferred.
AMS Early Childhood credential required or be actively working toward such a credential.
One year of classroom experience is preferred.
Experience in digital database systems and record keeping, Outlook, and Microsoft Word.

Verification of education (highest degree)
Medical statement to be renewed every 3 years
BCI-FBI fingerprinting (renew every 3 years)
Additional courses will be required to meet state requirements.  For example, CPR/First Aid.

Xavier University Montessori Lab School was established in 1966 as a demonstration project to reflect the philosophy and teaching methods of the Montessori Teacher Education Program at Xavier University. The directive of the Lab School was to serve as a venue for pre-service teachers, provide an interactive learning environment for Xavier undergraduate and graduate students, as well as providing an observation facility that would service the awareness of Montessori education to a broader community.
